Finnish Red Cross Blood Service (FRCBS) is the nationwide and only blood service provider in Finland.
Our operations cover the whole blood supply chain from vein to vein: blood donor recruiting, blood collection, testing, production, logistics and clinical support to the hospitals. We also offer hospitals laboratory services, such as blood group testing and investigations related to organ transplantation. Our laboratories carry out also blood group antibody screening of all pregnant women in Finland.
FRCBS operates the Finnish Stem Cell Registry and a high-quality production site to develop products for new advanced cell therapies. We also have a biobank, that collects samples from blood donors and serves researchers.
Our modern, secure digital infrastructure and information systems ensure our operations and services to run smoothly without disruption. We promote active utilization of data resources and work hard to develop useful digital services with smooth user experience for our clients, donors and staff.
A highly professional and effective organisation, excellent donor relations and co-operation with health-care staff and regulatory authorities ensure the success in achieving our goals. Together we create potential to enhance patients’ quality of life and to save lives.
We employ some 500 people. Most of the staff work at the main premises in Vantaa, where the production and laboratories are located. The R&D unit operates in the medical campus of Helsinki University. The blood donations are handled by our 10 donor centres around Finland and by the mobile donation events, which we organise over thousand times each year.
Finnish Red Cross Blood Service performs active scientific research by which we want to increase biomedical knowledge on our areas of expertise. The scientific research also creates the foundation for R&D projects in which we develop our products and services. We operate a research fund that funds R&D projects related to our branch.
The Blood Service is a part of the Finnish Red Cross. We are a not-for-profit organisation, and our prime concern is what is best for the patient. The income from selling hospitals the products and services we provide is used to cover the operating expenses and investments. Our net sales amount annually to about 60 million euros.
