Implementation of a whole blood programme within a blood service: Practical guidance for blood providers

In this review, published Jan 1 2026 in VoxSanguinis, our excellent European Blood Alliance (EBA) working group on innovations and new blood products provides practical guidance and a framework for blood providers aiming to implement a hashtag#WholeBlood programme.
The review arises from the interest expressed by the European Blood Services in implementation of whole blood programmes and summarises recommendations and practical implications identified from published literature, regulatory requirements, and current programmes.
In conclusion, implementation of a Whole Blood programme for routine and emergency management of patients with severe bleeding can be performed in a structured, safe, and sustainable way.
