EBA is searching for an Executive Director to oversee EBA operations, functions and activities.

European Blood Alliance (EBA)

The European Blood Alliance is a voluntary association of blood services currently in 26 European countries, representing 17 million blood donations annually, and has a budget of about €500,000. The Alliance is registered in the Netherlands and its office is in Brussels, Belgium.

The MISSION of the EBA is to contribute to the safety, quality, availability and cost effectiveness of the blood and tissue supply for the citizens of Europe by developing and maintaining an efficient and strong collaboration amongst European blood and tissue services.

The Alliance has four strategic objectives: to promote voluntary non-remunerated donations (VNRD) of blood and blood components and self-sufficiency from VNRD; to improve performance through collaboration; to support national and European authorities to promote best practice and; to facilitate information collection and knowledge exchange. These objectives include maintaining contacts with the EU institutions, the Council of Europe, the World Health Organisation and European and international Transfusion Medicine organizations.

EBA is searching for an Executive Director to oversee EBA operations, functions and activities.

Staff comprises currently of an administration and project officer, an advocacy officer and a project manager, in addition to the executive director. A medical director (part-time) will join the staff in January 2022.

The Executive Director’s key goals are:

  • Building organisational capability and capacity, and supporting the membership;
  • Contributing to EBA strategy and policies in close collaboration with the President and Executive Board of EBA;
  • Developing an agreed and prioritised list of activities, and seeking efficient means for their implementation
  • Representing EBA in contacts with other organisations and EU institutions (Commission, Parliament, Council etc).
  • Managing the EBA office, and supervising staff;

The Executive director is responsible for the EBA day to day affairs and is accountable to the EBA President

Person specification

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate achievements in leadership positions, must be able to demonstrate the ability to build organisational capacity for a membership organisation, and preferably be conversant with content knowledge of blood banking activities. A record of accomplishment in networking and interacting with EU bodies is a bonus.

Additional areas of expertise are as follows:

  • Able to work independently and outcome driven
  • Readiness to take the initiative, whilst maintaining close liaison with the President and Executive Board
  • Excellent communication skills both oral and written, needed for networking, for informing and influencing, for liaising with member states and (global) organisations, and for writing articles for EBA
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences between European countries
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential; knowledge of French and/or German would be an advantage
  • Alert to changes and developments in the blood services and transfusion field and an ability to incorporate these in the Alliance’s strategy.

Practical information

  • The Executive Director’s office will be in Brussels and candidates must live within reasonable commuting distance or willing to move there. The job requires travel mostly within Europe.

  • Salary: commensurate to experience. The position is open for consultants or as a salaried post.
